The Lagos state goverment has called for partnership with the Federal government on the control of the nation’s waterways.
The call was made by the commissioner for transport, comrade Kayode Opeifa at a stakeholders forum on “48 hour Cargo clearance target in Nigerian ports: A mirage” held in Lagos.
The commissioner who was represented by the Director Transport Policy and Coordination, Dr Taiwo salaam said the state government is ready to partner with the federal government on making the waterways viable for transportation of people, goods and services in the state, if they are willing.
He added that rift are not supposed to be recorded between the Lagos state water Authority (LASWA) and the Nigerian Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA).
According to him, “We have 59 jetties while NIWA has just two, so you can see reason why we should not be at loggerhead with each other.”
He stressed that, if the Water and the railway system is working efficiently, the clearance of goods at the ports would be faster.
