Moruf-Akinderu Fatai, Commissioner for Housing, and Oluwatobi Lawal, Managing Director of Lagos Building Investment Company, have been summoned to the Lagos State House of Assembly (LBIC).
Officials and residents were invited to discuss the planned demolition of some houses in Eti-Jakande Osa’s Estate area.
Hon. Noheem Adams, Deputy Majority Leader of the House, raised the issue under ‘Matter of Urgent Public Importance.’
Residents between the ages of 70 and 80 stormed Adams’ house Tuesday morning and demanded that the government stop demolishing their homes.
He remembered that the majority of them had lived in Maroko until their homes were demolished in the 1990s. They were then relocated to Jakande Estate by the authorities.
Adams informed his colleagues that the residents’ buildings are now under threat of demolition.
The residents have already written a petition to the Speaker, which is being handled by the House Committee on Public Petitions, which is chaired by Hon. Victor Akande.
On September 23, Akande led a House delegation to the estate, accompanied by LBIC officials who promised not to demolish buildings in the area.
According to the lawmaker, the LBIC went there on October 12 to mark houses for demolition.
Hon. Rotimi Olowo said in his contribution that the parties should reach an agreement because the home owners had invested heavily in the property.
The Speaker, Mudashiru Obasa, who approved the commissioner’s and LBIC boss’ invitation, stated that it was necessary to understand the government’s position.
