The factional National Publicity Secretary of the Labour Party, Abayomi Arabambi, has announced that plans are underway to expel Peter Obi from the party for aligning with the ADC-led opposition coalition.
In an interview with Channels TV on Tuesday, Arabambi described Obi’s actions as unconstitutional, stating that dual party allegiance is illegal.
“We are convening an NEC meeting where he will be expelled,” he declared, noting that the decision would be formalized at the upcoming party convention.
Arabambi argued that Obi did not contribute to building the Labour Party, but rather leveraged its structure during his 2023 presidential run. He cited factors such as the #EndSARS movement and disillusionment with previous administrations as the true drivers behind Obi’s popularity.
He also accused the former Anambra governor of trying to dominate the party and suppress internal opposition. Recently, the Labour Party gave Obi a 48-hour ultimatum to resign due to his participation in the coalition.
Party spokesman Obiora Ifoh described the coalition members as opportunists desperate for power.
Despite the backlash, Peter Obi has maintained that he is still a member of the Labour Party. He clarified that his coalition efforts are aimed at uniting opposition forces in preparation for the 2027 elections.
