Nigerian movie director and producer Kazim Adeoti has addressed the backlash he faced after marrying actress Mercy Aigbe.
Mercy announced their marriage in January 2022, which led Kazim’s first wife, Funsho Adeoti, to accuse Mercy of “taking him away.”
In a recent interview at the National Film and Video Censors Board conference in Lagos, Kazim defended his choice, explaining that his decision to take a second wife aligns with his Muslim faith, which permits polygamy.
Speaking on the public criticism, Kazim noted that, as a public figure, he cannot control others’ opinions or narratives. “When you’re in the public eye, there’s little you can do to control opinions,” he said.
He added, “What matters most is staying focused; in the end, the results speak for themselves.”
Despite the criticism, Kazim expressed his dedication to his work, staying focused on his goals and projects, which he believes will ultimately validate his decisions. His comments have sparked further conversation around polygamy and societal expectations in Nigeria’s entertainment industry.
