The Kano Emirate Council announced on Wednesday that it would not observe the Durbah activities during this year’s Eid-el-Fitr coming up this weekend.
The council said the cancellation is due to the health condition of the Emir of Kano, Alhaji Ado Bayero, who is the custodian of the tradition of the people of the state.
However, a source close to the emir, the 700 year-old age long tradition has been canceled due to the state of insecurity prevailing in the state.
The traditional Sallah Durbah has been an annual event practised in Kano since the advent of Islam to the ancient city.
A senior councillor in the emirate, Alhaji Abbas Sanusi, on Wednesday briefed newsmen in Kano after the emir’s meetings with all the district heads of the Emirate council, including the Dan Majen Kano, Mallam Lamido Sanusi.
