The governorship and state assembly elections have been postponed until March 18 by the Independent National Electoral Commission.
The exercise was previously scheduled for March 11, but INEC, citing a logistics crisis caused by BVAS configuration and transportation, announced on Wednesday evening that the election could not take place as planned.
“The elections were postponed to allow one more week for preparations,” an official familiar with the meeting told Peoples Gazette by telephone on Wednesday night. “We should be able to get everything in order before March 18.”
The meeting was still going on at INEC headquarters in Abuja at the time this report was filed.
The commission had persuaded the Abuja Division of the Court of Appeal to modify its order granting Peter Obi of the Labour Party and Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party permission to inspect election materials on the grounds that it needed to reconfigure the Bimodal Voters Accreditation System (BVAS) for the polls this Saturday.
