President Goodluck Jonathan has assured the aggrieved members of the Peoples Democratic Party in the senate that the party leadership will address the issue that sparked off their protest early in the week.
The senators had adjourned plenary abruptly on Tuesday and Wednesday to protest the alleged overbearing influence of the governors in the emergence of candidates that would fly the party’s flag in next year’s general elections.
Specifically, the PDP caucus in the senate alleged that the governors had hijacked the party and used it to manipulate last weekend’s congresses, which produced delegates that would elect candidates for the polls.
Worried by the development especially with the threats by the aggrieved senators to frustrate government’s activities, Senate President David Mark arranged a meeting between his colleagues and the President.
A source, who did not want his name mentioned, said Jonathan sympathised with the senators and promised to address their grievances.
The source said the President assured the senators that the party would guarantee the return of any of them who had interest in seeking re-election.
Senate spokesperson, Eyinnaya Abaribe, declined to comment on the issue.
