Former Nigerian international, John Fashanu,at a press conference Tuesday in Asokoro Abuja declared his support for the re-election of President Goodluck Jontahan.
Fashanu said he his pitching his tent because the president has done well in the area of sports.
He said: “I want to publicly declare my support for President Goodluck Jonathan in the February 14 presidential poll. Unarguably, the polity is divided over who becomes the next president between the candidacy of President Jonathan and former Head of State, General Muhammad Buhari (rtd) of the All Progressive Congress (APC). I have been receiving calls and sms from my friends and well wishers including those on Twitter, FACEBOOK and other social media asking me who is my candidate? Well I am here to announce to the whole world that my candidate for Presidential poll is President Goodluck Jonathan because of the unprecedented achievements which the country has been achieving in sports. I have been so proud and impressed with Mr. President’s achievements in sports.”
One of the achievements he highlighted is the fact that the Super Eagles won the Nations Cup in South Africa under President Jonathan’s administration and for the first time since 1994.
He also noted that the Super Eagles equaled their best ever record at the World Cup in Brazil under him and the nation’s U-17 team won the World Cup trophy in the United Arab Emirates and the female U-20 team won the silver in their own World and had the best performance at the Commonwealth Games and the World Athletics Championships.
Fashanu , a one-time Nigeria Football Federation board member was a prolific striker in the 80’s.
