The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) have started mobilizing their affiliated organizations and state councils in preparation for a nationwide shutdown on Wednesday. This protest is in response to the alleged brutal attack on NLC President Joe Ajaero during a protest in Imo State.
During a protest march in Owerri, Imo State, NLC President Joe Ajaero was reportedly arrested by the Nigerian Police, which led to calls for investigation and action against those responsible. The police have denied the arrest and stated that Ajaero was taken into protective custody.
The organized labor is demanding an investigation, the redeployment of the Imo Commissioner of Police, the removal of the Area Commander of the Police, and the arrest and prosecution of an aide to the governor, Nwaneri Chinasa.
The National Executives Council of the organized labor organizations will meet in Abuja to finalize the proposed nationwide strike. While it is expected to proceed as scheduled, the decision ultimately depends on the directives from the NEC of the two bodies.
The NLC alleges that Ajaero’s hometown in Imo State was invaded and attacked, possibly as an attempt to assassinate him. The NLC accuses Governor Hope Uzodimma of violating human rights and democratic principles, and they emphasize the need for accountability and the restoration of peace in the affected community.
The situation in Imo State is seen as a troubling development, with concerns about the use of excessive force and a descent into authoritarianism. The NLC calls for measures to rein in the governor’s actions and restore peace and freedom to the affected community.
