Twitter co-founder and Block CEO, Jack Dorsey, has unveiled a new messaging app called Bitchat, designed to work without an internet connection.
The app leverages Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) mesh technology to enable encrypted, peer-to-peer messaging between nearby devices. One of its standout capabilities is its offline functionality, making it ideal for communication in areas with poor or no internet access.
Bitchat ensures user privacy with end-to-end encryption and temporary message storage, as all chats are saved locally and automatically deleted shortly after being sent.
The app also supports message delivery to users who were offline when the message was sent — once they reconnect to the Bluetooth network, the message is transmitted. Devices form dynamic Bluetooth clusters, allowing messages to be passed along by proximity, extending beyond typical Bluetooth range as users move.
