Nollywood actress Iyabo Ojo has shared her opinion on the ongoing conversation involving Kunle Afolayan and Funke Akindele, delivering a strong but subtle message.
Her reaction came after a public disagreement began when Afolayan criticised the use of dance skits and social media challenges to promote movies a promotional method widely linked to Akindele. Several industry personalities, including Mo Abudu, Omotola Jalade Ekeinde, and Regina Chukwu, have also contributed their opinions on the issue.
The discussion has sparked widespread reactions across Nollywood, with many debating whether viral dance trends and online challenges are now essential marketing tools for films in Nigeria.
The controversy started when Kunle Afolayan, while speaking at the premiere of his latest project, stated that earning billions at the cinema does not necessarily matter to him if it does not translate into meaningful personal returns. His remarks came shortly after Funke Akindele’s movie crossed ₦2.4 billion at the Nigerian box office, while Toyin Abraham’s film also exceeded ₦1 billion.
Although Afolayan did not directly mention any names, the timing of his statement raised eyebrows. In response, Akindele encouraged her colleagues to avoid jealousy and reminded them that there is enough space in the industry for everyone to succeed.
The situation escalated further when Afolayan openly criticised the increasing trend of using dance skits and viral social media challenges to promote movies. Akindele responded by posting a dance video promoting her own film, which drew even more public reactions. Later, Afolayan clarified that he had no issue with her personally and mentioned that she had contacted him angrily over the situation.
Other Nollywood stars also reacted to the debate. Regina Chukwu shared a message emphasising that success happens at different times for different people and encouraged filmmakers to stay focused on their craft. Mo Abudu applauded the creativity of Akindele and Abraham but stated that dancing is not her personal style. Omotola Jalade Ekeinde supported Afolayan’s stance, noting that she dances only when she feels like it and not as a marketing requirement.
Iyabo Ojo eventually added her voice through a subtle but sharp post on her Instagram page on Friday, 6 February 2026. She suggested that jealousy can be dangerous and stressed that there are no fixed rules in the entertainment industry. She also encouraged people to focus on what works best for them instead of criticising others.
“Jealousy is the last class to attend before becoming a witch”
“Who made the rules? Nobody you gotta answer to. 2026 ain’t for talkers — it’s for doers. Do what works for YOU. Let others win their way. You win yours. Period. 💯”
