Nigeria’s Super Eagles have won a closely contested match against the Elephants of Ivory Coast, with a score of 1-0. The game was intense, and William Troost-Ekong’s on-the-spot kick proved to be the decisive moment after Victor Osimhen missed several opportunities.
The match began with Ivory Coast mounting pressure on the Nigerian team, with Seko Fofana attempting to score a couple of times. However, Nigeria’s goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali managed to keep all the threats at bay with his brilliant saves and composure.
The Super Eagles’ breakthrough came in the 55th minute when Osimhen was roughly tackled by an Ivory Coast player inside the 18-yard box. While the on-field referee continued the game, the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) called for a check that confirmed the penalty, which was calmly slotted in by Troost-Ekong.
The win has placed Nigeria in the second position in Group A, with equal points shared with Equatorial Guinea, who have a better goal difference. The Super Eagles’ next match will be against Guinea Bissau, who are yet to win a single game in the group, and the match is scheduled for Monday, January 22.
