According to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), only one 2023 candidate for the 2023 elections appeared in Katsina for an integrity test.
Muhammed Bashir, the NDLEA State Commander, made the revelation to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Tuesday.
Bashir stated that only the Peoples Redemption Party (PRP) governorship candidate, Imran Jino, visited the agency and tested for free.
The official urged Katsina politicians running for various political positions to attend the test.
The NDLEA commander went on to say that doing so would encourage their supporters to avoid drug use.
“Politicians should not encourage those using drugs within their campaign environment, and we are still advising them to come up for integrity tests.
“I’m happy that one of the governorship candidates has done that; others should take a cue from that.”
Bashir noted that the electioneering ahead of the 2023 general elections can be free, fair and peaceful if politicians caution their followers against hard abuse.
“As a politician, you don’t need to give drugs to your supporters for them to be able to support you and you don’t need to be violent.”
The NDLEA commander described drug abuse as the mother of all crimes and that giving illicit substances to youths will destroy them.
