Toronto striker, Jermain Defoe has expressed his heart felt disappointment after being omitted in the England squad from the 2014 FIFA World Cup tournament.
The 31-year old MLS star has played 55 caps for the national team. He admitted being more heart-broken at his omission this time than his exclusion from Sven-Goran Eriksson 2006 World Cup Squad. He also said it was the lowest point in his career, he told the Sun; “This was, without doubt, the lowest point of my career. I’m devastated. I can’t remember much of the conversation. As soon as he told me I was not in the squad I switched off. I was heartbroken. I got left out of the squad in 2006 by Sven-Goran Eriksson after traveling to the training camp and never wanted to feel that low again. This feels far worse than then.”
Defoe has scored 19 goals for England and he has said he has not seen his switch from the English Premier League to the MSL as the reason for his exclusion. He said “I never had a discussion with Roy about any possible impact on my England chances coming here because I didn’t feel the need to. And I did read a quote from him, saying that me playing in MLS doesn’t change anything because he knows me as a player.”
