A former Super Eagles goalkeeper, Ike Shorunmu, on Monday described Carl Ikeme, the current number one national keeper, as a talent that would make his mark with the national team.
Shorunmu told the News Agency of Nigeria in Lagos that Ikeme should be given maximum support to succeed as the long term goalkeeper of the Super Eagles.
The immediate past goalkeeper trainer of the Super Eagles during Stephen Keshi’s tenure as Chief Coach, said it was not an easy task finding a capable replacement for Vincent Enyeama.
He said: “Ikeme is trying.
“We just need to give him the much needed support and then we see how far he goes.
“You know that it is not an easy task to replace a goalkeeper like Vincent Enyeama, who has represented the country creditably in many competitions over the years.
“Of the three goalkeepers currently battling for the number one jersey, he is the most promising for now.”
NAN reports that Shorunmu was a member of the Super Eagles squad that won the silver medal at the 2000 Ghana-Nigeria jointly hosted Africa Cup of Nations tournament.
The erstwhile Besikstas FC of Turkey goalkeeper was also Enyeama’s immediate predecessor in the Super Eagles and played his last two matches for the team at the 2002 Korea-Japan World Cup.
Enyeama eventually got the nod of the then coach of the team, Adegboye Onigbinde, to man the post against England in the last group match and performed creditably in the game, which ended 0-0.
