Manchester United have won the EFL Cup win, beating Southampton 3-2 to help Jose Mourinho become the first manager to win a trophy in his debut season with the Red Devils.
Zlatan Ibrahimovic scored a late goal to hand United the cup over Southampton at the Wembley stadium after Manolo Gabbiadini found the back of the net in either half to cancel out goals from Ibrahimovic and Jesse Lingard.
The victory also hands the Red Devils a bragging rights over their closest rivals, Liverpool becoming the most successful club in England with 42 major honours which is one better than Liverpool’s trophy haul.
Former Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson had earlier boasted about knocking the Reds off their perch as the most decorated club in the Premier League during his time at the Old Trafford, winning multiple honours for Manchester United.
Fergie said: ‘My greatest challenge is not what’s happening at the moment, my greatest challenge was knocking Liverpool right off their f***g perch. And you can print that,’
Prior to the match, Jose Mourinho downplayed the prospects of becoming the first manager to win a trophy in his debut season with United. He said: ‘For the cub important [it’s important] but for me, not so much,’
‘I’m not thinking about myself but the club, the fans and the players.’
