A tragic stampede at a children’s funfair in Ibadan has left 35 children dead and six others injured, plunging the nation into mourning.
The event, organized by Prophetess Naomi Silekunola, the ex-wife of the Ooni of Ife, and Ibadan-based broadcaster Oriyomi Hamzat, was intended for 5,000 children. However, overcrowding occurred when over 7,500 children attended, exacerbating the chaos.
Inspector General of Police Kayode Egbetokun has taken charge of the investigation. Naomi Silekunola was arrested and reportedly collapsed on Friday while in custody. She was rushed to the Police Hospital in Eleyele for treatment. Oriyomi Hamzat, the Chairman of Agidigbo FM, was also hospitalized following his arrest.
The Oyo State Police Command confirmed the arrest of eight individuals linked to the incident, including Silekunola and the Principal of Islamic High School, Ibadan. The case has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department, with the Deputy Commissioner of Police overseeing the probe.
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu expressed deep sorrow over the tragedy, ordering a comprehensive investigation to uncover any negligence or misconduct. He emphasized the importance of accountability and improving safety measures at public events.
The incident has sparked nationwide outrage and calls for justice. The Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, extended his condolences to the families of the victims, pledging to support efforts aimed at providing relief and healing to those affected.
