Ikedi Ohakim has revealed how he was nearly killed by gunmen on Monday, January 2.
According to the former governor of Imo state, some of his security detail was killed in the bloody attack.
Further, the governor revealed that he escaped death thanks to God and the bulletproof vehicle.
The former governor narrowly avoided death when gunmen opened fire on his vehicle in Imo state’s Ehime Mbano Local Government Area.
Ohakim claimed he escaped due to God’s special grace and the bulletproof vehicle he drove in.
He claimed he thought he was dead when the gunmen opened fire on his vehicle, which he was driving with two of his children at the time.
“We were driving between Isiala Mbano and Ehime Mbano,” he said. These people stopped us in the town of Umualumaku.
“They attacked us from behind and were firing at our vehicles consistently. I thought I was a dead man and I was with two of my children – my son and daughter.
“What saved me was the bulletproof vehicle. That I am alive today is by the special grace of God and the bulletproof vehicle.”
The former governor expressed regret that the gunmen killed four police officers in his convoy, including the driver.
The former governor went on to say that the gunmen pursued them and continued firing at the tyres, but that the vehicle had run-flat tyres, which allowed them to continue driving even after a puncture. As a result, even when they fired at the tyres in an attempt to immobilize us, the vehicle continued to move. They would have cornered and finished us if they had been regular tyres and the vehicle had stopped.
