We all want to save more money and spend the salary more wisely, but at the end of the day, a girl has to eat.
After all, you can’t work or do any money making activities if you’re hungry, right? For foodies who like to eat for Africa and even for those who like to eat out every other day, we need to find a balance. How much of your income should go into your food budget anyways?
What the experts say
According to the experts, 10% – 15% of our salary on food should go to your food budget. So if you’re earning 100,000 Naira, you should be spending about 10k to 15k on food. This includes the ewa agoyin and bread you buy everyday at the office.
Is this feasible
Well, if you have dependents, this figure obviously won’t be enough. If you only need to take care of yourself, you can find ways to make it work for you.
Here’s how you can reduce how much you spend on food and streamline your food budget:
1. Invest in a freezer
There’s a high probability that you’ll be wasting food if you don’t have a freezer. Having a freezer is awesome because you’ll be able to buy cheaper items when you shop in bulk and save time by cooking in bulk as well. If you don’t have one, you should start planning to buy one.
2. Stop eating out
We need to legit stop this. If you know money is tight right now, then regularly eating out should not be a thing with you. You will honestly save money by eating your own food.
And helllurrrr??? It is healthier and probably tastes better
3. Shop at major markets
Every place has that market (or section of the market) where you can get food at really cheap prices. In Lagos, we have places like Mile 12 Market, Kentucky Market, etc. Buying your food staples there will help you save money.
