In an unexpected step, Godwin Obaseki, Governor of Edo State, has dissolved the State Executive Council and relieved all Special Assistants (SAs) and Senior Special Assistants (SSAs) of their positions with immediate effect.
On Wednesday, the announcement was made during the Weekly Executive Council meeting.
Governor Obaseki expressed gratitude to the Council members for their service to the government and the people of the state in a statement issued by the office of the Special Adviser (Media Projects), Caruso Osagie.
The statement also confirmed that the dissolution of the Council took immediate effect.
“The governor said the dissolution of the Council takes immediate effect.“The State’s cabinet was dissolved during the Weekly Executive Council meeting on Wednesday,” the statement said.“The Governor also said that, beginning from today, all Special Assistants (SAs) and Senior Special Assistants (SSAs) have been relieved of their appointments,”
the statement added.
Many people were taken aback when the State Executive Council was disbanded and SAs and SSAs were relieved of their positions without explanation.
It is unknown whether a new Executive Council will be established shortly.
Governor Obaseki has lately made headlines for defecting from the All Progressives Congress (APC) to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) last year.
In September 2020, he was re-elected Governor of Edo State by the Peoples Democratic Party.
The dissolution of the Executive Council and the dismissal of SAs and SSAs are expected to elicit reactions from a variety of sources in the coming days.
