Renowned gospel singer Israel Terhemba Ikyereve, popularly known as New Jerusalem, has passed away at the age of 53.
His death has sparked an outpouring of grief across Benue State, especially among Christians who admired his unique transformation of Tiv Swange music into a tool for preaching the gospel.
Former Benue State Governor Chief Samuel Ortom led tributes during a condolence visit to Ikyereve’s family home in Makurdi. Accompanied by members of the Brethren Prayer Group, Ortom described the late singer as a deeply committed Christian whose influence through music extended internationally.
“His songs touched my heart as a lover of Christ,” Ortom said. “That attraction led me to seek a personal relationship with him, which began a lasting bond with his family.”
The former governor recalled a moment when he saw Ikyereve’s music being featured during a program in Australia, where a Tiv instructor was playing his songs while teaching music. Ortom cited this as a clear demonstration of the global reach of Ikyereve’s ministry.
He prayed for strength and comfort for the family and vowed to continue supporting them and the New Jerusalem Gospel Music Troupe, assuring them of his commitment beyond the funeral.
Representing the family, Hon. Iorshagher Ikyereve, the singer’s elder brother, expressed sincere appreciation to Ortom for his steadfast support throughout Israel’s illness and after his passing. He also revealed that one of Israel’s sons was named “Ortom” as a mark of respect and gratitude for the former governor’s kindness.
Rev. Pastor Tor Ujah and Dr. Joseph Antyo, both leaders of the Brethren Prayer Group, led prayers during the visit.
Israel Ikyereve is survived by his wife, gospel singer Deborah Msendoo Ikyereve, their four children, and several extended family members.
His burial will take place on Saturday, July 5, 2025, at Sati Agirigi, Mbamo, Shitile, in Katsina-Ala Local Government Area, Benue State.
