Nigerian megastar Davido has seemingly taken a side in the ongoing Afrobeat heritage debate, throwing a subtle jab at his rival Wizkid while celebrating the life of the late legend, Fela Anikulapo-Kuti.

The Tribute

The singer was spotted in Los Angeles at a high-profile event honoring the Afrobeat pioneer. Photos from the gathering show Davido bonding comfortably with Fela’s children, including Femi and Yeni Kuti.

The Message

Following the event, Davido took to Instagram to share moments from the night. Notably, he captioned the post with lyrics from Fela’s iconic track Gentleman. To many keen observers, this choice of words was a deliberate mockery of those recently “disrespecting” the legend’s memory.

This public display of solidarity comes hot on the heels of a fierce controversy involving Wizkid and Fela’s son, Seun Kuti. The drama escalated when Wizkid claimed he was “bigger” than Fela and questioned Seun’s authority. Seun had previously criticized fans for labeling modern artists as the “new Fela,” arguing that such comparisons undermine the depth and political struggle inherent in his father’s work.
