A second close friend of the dead confirmed to the media that the retired general was in good health on Friday but took ill early on Saturday and passed away shortly after.
General Onyeuko, a former Director of Defence Media Operations, only left the Nigerian Army after the recent appointment of new service chiefs.

On Friday, a somber gathering gathered at the National Military Cemetery in Abuja to bury officers who had died in Niger State with the military’s help.
The military officers were slain in an ambush by robbers in Niger State, as reported by Naija News.
Bello Matawalle, the Minister of State for Defense, Major General Christopher Gwabin Musa, the Chief of Defence Staff, and other military chiefs were among those paying their respects.
The officers died in battle on August 14, including during an air mission, according to the Defence Headquarters.
