Salihu Tanko Yakasai, former media aide to ex-Governor Abdullahi Ganduje of Kano State, has shed light on why Northerners are displaying Russian flags during the ongoing nationwide protests.
Nigerians initiated the #EndBadGovernance protests on August 1 to express their discontent over food inflation and the deteriorating economic conditions in the country. However, viral clips from the North show protesters waving Russian flags.
Yakasai, writing on X, suggested that the protesters aim to capture the federal government’s attention. He explained, “The average northerner is well informed. They heard stories on BBC Hausa & DW about what happened in Mali, Burkina, & Niger. They want to use the flag to get the attention of FG. My fear is that they may end up attracting the attention of external forces who will exploit the situation.”
The Russian Embassy in Nigeria has distanced itself from the protesters, emphasizing that their actions do not reflect any official Russian government policy or position.
