World football governing body FIFA has selected Gambian referee Papa Bakary Gassama as one of the 25 who will officiate at this year’s tournament.
He is the first Gambian entrusted which such responsibility and the Gambia’s vice president has expressed satisfaction at the appointment of the 34-year old referee for helping paint a mark of history for Gambia and also helping to put the country’s name on the global map.
The referee was nominated for 2013 Confederation of African Football (CAF) Referee of the Year. The other two referees from the continent are from Ivory Coast and Algeria respectively.
