Nollywood actress and producer Funke Akindele has shared an emotional account of how she nearly lost her life following the death of her mother in 2023.
In a candid interview with media personality Chude Jideonwo, Funke opened up about a painful period in her life that included the loss of her marriage, the passing of her mother, and her defeat in the Lagos State gubernatorial election.
Reflecting on that time, she revealed how deeply the loss of her mother impacted her, especially because she tried to stay strong and suppressed her emotions.
“I don’t like mourning,” she said. “When my mum passed, I just wanted to move on quickly. I didn’t let myself break down, but that decision affected me deeply. I nearly lost my life.”
She recalled suffering from heartache and stress, which reached a boiling point when she became the target of false accusations online. For the first time, Funke said she went live on social media to vent her frustrations.
“Someone acted in my movie, got paid, and left. Suddenly, I was being accused of things I didn’t do. I was already dealing with so much—grieving my mum, handling a broken marriage, recovering from a political loss, trying to get back to work and raise my kids alone—and then this,” she shared.
Funke revealed that the emotional weight finally caught up with her, and she broke down in tears, spending weeks in that state.
