Former Barcelona coach Frank Rijkaard believes Lionel Messi deserves to win the 2012 FIFA Ballon d’Or as he outdid his competitors.
The Argentine has been shortlisted for the award alongside teammate Andres Iniesta, as well as Real Madrid forward Cristiano Ronaldo.
Although 2012 was not a very successful year to the Catalans in terms of silverware, Messi continued to demonstrate his brilliance and went on to score a total of 91 goals for club and country.
“I’m going for Lionel Messi, because I think he’s the best player on the three-man final shortlist and he’s performed brilliantly this year,” Rijkaard told reporters.
“He’s an incredible person. Messi is not simply a uniquely talented footballer. He’s also strong mentally, very bright and exceptionally dedicated to his job.
“Personally speaking I enjoy watching him play and I’m deeply proud of him and what he has achieved. Quite simply, he’s the best.”
The official announcement of Ballon d’Or 2012 winner will be made on 7th January, 2013 at a gala event in Zurich, Switzerland.
