Riot police have been deployed in a Dutch village after an estimated 4,000 people turned up to a teenage girl’s birthday party.
Officers in Haren were pelted with stones, bottles and even bicycles after a party invitation posted on Facebook was inadvertently sent to 30,000 people after the teenager forgot to mark it as private.
Six people were injured, three of them seriously.
Mayor Rob Bats said today: “Scum ran amok in our town.”
Dutch media reported that the party was originally planned as a small celebration by a 16-year-old girl but her invitation went viral when she posted it on Facebook.
Some of the people arriving in Haren last night wore T-shirts emblazoned with “Project X Haren”, a reference to the film Project X that portrayed an out-of-control party.
