The World Health Organisation has issued a warning that a new deadly strain of gonorrhea resistant to antibiotics is gently mutating and “growing wings by the day.”

Excerpt from an Associated Press report which quotes Dr. Manjula Lusti-Narasimhan , a scientist at WHO goes thus  :

“This organism has basically been developing resistance against every medication we’ve thrown at it. In a couple of years it will have become resistant to every treatment option we have available now.”

Gonorrhea, sometimes known as the clap, is the second most common STD in the world after chlamydia, with some 106 million cases reported worldwide each year.

Even worse, the mutated strain doesn’t cause the telltale symptoms typically associated with regular gonorrhea.

“Now people with gonorrhea sometimes … only notice the discharge … it’s not that painful anymore” , Francis Ndowa, the WHO’s former head specialist on STDs.

With the time ticking and scientist in a limbo,is it time to tie the strings and zip up?
