Former Uganda Cranes goalkeeper Abel Dhaira has passed on from abdominal cancer in Iceland.

The talented 28 years old goalkeeper was confirmed to be suffering from abdominal cancer after undergoing months of treatment at the University of Iceland hospital.

The Iceland-based player who was featuring for IBV Vestmannaeyjar Club was granted permission to return to Kampala for treatment but later discovered to be suffering from a rare type of intestinal cancer that was at first thought to be ulcers.

IBV Vestmannaeyjar decided to pay for his hospital bill as he underwent chemotherapy. He died when he was to be transfered to Germany for further treatment.

The player started his career in his hometown Walukuba in Jinja for Walukuba Red Stars as a striker before joining Boca Juniors, Wama FC and Aldinah FC.

He later became a goalkeeper at Mbale Industry before being signed by the Express FC where he featured for two consecutive seasons.

He joined the IBV in 2014 where he has played for the last two years. Other clubs that he has featured for include DR Congo’s AS Vita and Tanzania’s Simba SC.
