Former Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has reportedly passed away at the age of 92 after a prolonged illness. Singh, who played a pivotal role in transforming India into a global economic force through groundbreaking reforms, passed away on Thursday.
Singh served as India’s Prime Minister from 2004 to 2014. During his first term, the country experienced remarkable economic growth. However, his second term saw a slowdown in the economy, which somewhat diminished the luster of his earlier successes.
Reports from the All India Institute of Medical Sciences stated that Singh was rushed to a New Delhi hospital after collapsing at his residence on Thursday. Despite medical intervention, he could not be revived and was pronounced dead.
The nation is grieving the loss of one of its most respected leaders. Current Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his condolences on X (formerly Twitter), saying, “India mourns the loss of a deeply respected leader. As Prime Minister, he worked tirelessly to enhance the lives of our citizens.”
Rahul Gandhi, a leader in the opposition Congress party, shared his sorrow, stating, “I have lost a mentor and a guide. Dr. Singh led India with wisdom and integrity. Millions who admired him will cherish his memory with pride.” Gandhi, a prominent political figure and part of the Nehru-Gandhi lineage, highlighted Singh’s influence and leadership.
Mallikarjun Kharge, the opposition leader in the upper house of parliament, described Singh as “a visionary statesman, a leader of impeccable integrity, and an economist of unmatched expertise.”
President Droupadi Murmu also paid her respects, writing on X that Singh would always be remembered for his “dedicated service to the nation, his spotless political career, and his humility.”
Singh’s demise marks the conclusion of an era for India. His legacy, characterized by economic reforms and a leadership style rooted in wisdom and humility, will be remembered for generations.
