The third Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Ibrahim Lamorde, has reportedly passed away at the age of 61 in Egypt, where he had gone for medical treatment. He died on Sunday while undergoing a procedure to remove a kidney stone, having initially traveled to Egypt for his wife’s medical care.
His remains are expected to be flown back to Nigeria on Monday for burial according to Islamic rites, with assistance from the Federal Government. A source remarked on the irony of the situation, as Lamorde had taken his wife to Egypt for medical attention.
Born on December 20, 1962, Lamorde joined the Nigerian Police in 1986 and retired as a Deputy Inspector General of Police in 2021. He served as EFCC chairman from 2011 to 2015. Appointed in an acting capacity on November 3, 2011, following Farida Waziri’s removal by former President Goodluck Jonathan, Lamorde was confirmed by the Senate as the third substantive chairman on February 15, 2012.
