Residents of flooded communities in Ogun have been advised not to drink water from boreholes or wells at this time.
The Ogun State government urged residents of flood-affected lowlands areas in Isheri, Warewa, Magboro, Arepo, and the Estates in Ifo Local Government to avoid drinking water from wells and boreholes and to prioritize hygiene.
This, it was claimed, became critical in preventing the spread of cholera and other waterborne diseases.
Ola Oresanya, the Ogun Commissioner for Environment, made the appeal during his inspection tour of border towns to find an immediate solution to the disaster that has left many homeless.
The flood, according to Oresanya, contaminated water sources and facilities with chemical contaminants such as fuel, pesticides, and metals.
Pathogens in sewage, cemeteries, septic tanks, and dead animals have also contaminated water sources, according to him.
According to the Commissioner, the government will begin dredging and clearing drainage channels and waterways.
He blamed the flooding on residents’ lax attitude toward waste management, among other critical environmental issues, and claimed that some people built on water channels.
