The traditional ruler of Abala Unor and Abala Obodo in Delta State’s Ndokwa East local government area, Igwe Fredrick Chukwulobe Egbunkonye 111, has been forced to relocate to Asaba due to a raging flood.
The flood caused by the overflow of the banks of the River Niger has also submerged the community, leaving a large portion of Abala Kingdom deserted.
In his lamentation, the monarch stated that previous flooding had caused those who had fled the community to return to find their homes burgled and their crops harvested by unknown people.
As a result, Igwe Egbunkonye urged the state and federal governments, as well as corporate organizations, to assist flood victims, some of whom were unwilling to leave their ancestral homes.
He also urged the federal government to immediately begin dredging of the River Niger as a solution to the state’s perennial flooding of the coastal areas, pointing out that property worth millions of naira is lost to natural disasters in Abala Kingdom every year.
