Afrobeats star Adedamola Adefolahan, better known as Fireboy DML, has shared the tough choices he faced before rising to fame, despite holding a university degree.
During a recent appearance on the 90s Baby Show in London, the “Peru” singer revealed that before his breakthrough in 2018, he nearly went into selling rechargeable lamps under Ajah Bridge in Lagos.
“Thank God Olamide signed me. I was seriously thinking about going into the lamp business. I met someone under Ajah Bridge who was explaining how it works, and I told him I was interested,” Fireboy recalled.
He mentioned that although he was already running a pepper soup joint at the time, he was searching for something he felt carried more respect.
“At that point, it felt more respectable. Being called a lamp seller seemed better. Selling pepper soup was tough, man. My parents didn’t even know I was doing all that. It was a rough time, but we thank God now,” he said.
In an unexpected twist, Fireboy revealed that his life changed when he got signed to YBNL Nation by Olamide through a simple WhatsApp message—a moment that launched his music career.
