The Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (FMARD), Mr. Sonny Echono, has announced that the Federal Government may review the import policy on staple food items such as rice, fish and wheat into the country within the next three years.
Echono who disclosed this in Abuja during a meeting with the Executive Secretary of the Nigerian Investment Promotion Commission, Uju Hassan-Baba, said the current import policy on staple foods is unfavourable to the citizenry.
In an earlier statement issued from the ministry on Sunday, Echono said, “The ministry would in the next three years seek the review of the current unfavourable policy by the Federal Government which allows the importation of staple food items such as rice, wheat and fish into the country.”
Adding that there is a need to link Nigerian farmers to the international market so as to participate in global trade.
