The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) is currently on an industrial action, while the Minister of Labour, Employment, and Productivity, Simon Lalong, has called for a meeting with labour leaders to avoid a possible shutdown of the nation’s economy. The NLC and Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC) have directed its members to mobilize for a nationwide strike over the assault on NLC president Joe Ajaero. The organized labour has urged its affiliates to comply with the resolutions of the National Executive Council. President of TUC, Festus Osifo, stated that the strike would persist until “government at all levels wake up to their responsibility.” Meanwhile, the union leaders are expected to meet with the Bola Tinubu-led government later on Tuesday, as the Minister of Labour has convened a meeting with the Labour leaders. The decision to embark on the strike was made by NLC and TUC following the brutalisation of NLC National President, Joe Ajaero, last week in Imo State. The attack has drawn widespread condemnation from the Organised Labour, with the former Commissioner of Police in Imo State, Mohammed Barde, being accused of complicity in the current crisis.
