The Federal Government says over 700 people linked to terrorism have been tried and sentenced in Nigeria.

According to Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, the convictions came through the Special Terrorism Court set up specifically for insurgency cases.

The court, now in its eighth session, has ruled against several high-profile suspects, with more trials still underway. Idris explained that the process shows the government is committed to justice through legal channels, not indefinite detention.

He added that many others are still being held while investigations continue. The Department of State Services has completed work on major cases, including the Owo Church massacre, the Nyanya bomb blasts, and the Yelwata killings. Meanwhile, the Police and the Civil Defence Corps are also pursuing cases involving terrorism, pipeline vandalism, and oil theft across the country.

Idris stressed that the Attorney-General is coordinating the agencies to speed up trials and rebuild public trust in the justice system.

The update comes shortly after the United States listed Nigeria as a “Country of Particular Concern.” Idris rejected the allegation of religious oppression, saying violent extremists target citizens of all faiths. He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to improving security and ensuring accountability.
