The Federal Ministry of Education has reaffirmed that English Language and Mathematics remain mandatory subjects for all students registering for their O’Level exams, regardless of the recent updates to tertiary admission guidelines.
In a statement by Boriowo Folasade, Director of Press and Public Relations, the Ministry clarified that the new admission framework does not exempt any student from taking these two core subjects.
According to Dr. Maruf Tunji Alausa, the Honourable Minister of Education, the reform is designed to promote a more inclusive and flexible admission system for higher education institutions across Nigeria.
“This adjustment ensures that talented students are not barred from accessing tertiary education simply because they do not have credits in subjects unrelated to their chosen courses,” — Dr. Alausa stated.
Earlier reports noted that students pursuing arts and humanities would no longer be required to obtain a credit in Mathematics for university or polytechnic admission.
However, the Ministry reiterated that all students must still register and sit for both English Language and Mathematics in the Senior School Certificate Examinations (SSCE). These subjects, it emphasized, are vital for communication, critical thinking, and lifelong learning, ensuring that students remain well-prepared for academic and career advancement.
The Ministry also urged students, parents, and stakeholders to verify information only through official channels to avoid misinformation.
This clarification reflects the Federal Government’s ongoing commitment to promoting inclusive education, equitable access, and sustained academic standards while giving every deserving student the chance to thrive.
