In response to recent explosions in Rivers State, the Federal Government has deployed 10,000 operatives from the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) to safeguard oil pipelines and critical infrastructure.
NSCDC spokesperson Afolabi Babawale confirmed the deployment on Wednesday, stating that the personnel are focused on preventing vandalism, particularly in the Niger Delta region. He also issued a strong warning against any attempts to destroy national assets, emphasizing that the operatives, working in collaboration with other security agencies, are committed to protecting lives and property.
The newly appointed state administrator, retired Vice Admiral Ibokette Ibas, was sworn in on Wednesday with an initial six-month mandate to oversee governance in Rivers State.
Prior to the emergency rule, tensions escalated in the state, with three explosions occurring within two days. These incidents followed threats from Ijaw groups, who warned of disrupting oil production and crippling the economy if the move to impeach Governor Siminalayi Fubara succeeded.
Babawale highlighted the heightened state of security across the country, particularly in the Niger Delta, where the NSCDC is actively collaborating with other security forces to prevent economic sabotage, pipeline vandalism, and damage to government property.
Meanwhile, increased military presence was observed at the Government House in Port Harcourt on Wednesday following Governor Fubara’s departure. His current location remains unknown, though reports suggest he may have retreated to his private residence or hometown in Opobo. Security measures have been significantly tightened, with armored personnel carriers stationed at the entrance and strict monitoring of movements in and out of the premises.
An aide to Governor Fubara, speaking anonymously, confirmed that soldiers have taken control of the Government House. He reported that additional troops arrived as an advance team for the incoming sole administrator.
“As I speak, more soldiers are arriving at the Government House. This afternoon alone, over 15 troops entered. They are believed to be an advance team for the sole administrator who is yet to assume office. More soldiers arrived in the evening as well,” the aide revealed.
