In an effort to prevent the workers’ planned statewide indefinite strike, the Federal Government has invited the heads of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) to a special meeting on Sunday, October 1, 2023.
The meeting will start in the State House in Abuja at 2 p.m., according to Newsmen.
The NLC and the TUC had already announced that they intended to strike on October 3, 2023, in opposition to the government’s elimination of fuel subsidies and hike in energy prices.
Additionally, the administration had acquired a court order to prevent the unions from going on strike, which they had rejected.
However, the administration claimed that because the National Industrial Court is now hearing cases involving fuel subsidies and energy rates, continuing the strike would be a serious breach of the court’s decision.
The government also urged the unions to take into account the nation’s economic circumstances and how the strike would affect the populace.
Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila, the Chief of Staff to the President, Hon. Simon Lalong, the Minister of Labor and Employment, Hon. Nkiruka Onyejeocha, and other senior government representatives are anticipated to attend the meeting.
The meeting is also anticipated to include representatives from the national leadership of the TUC and the NLC.
