The Federal Government of Nigeria has declared public holidays for the upcoming Christmas and New Year celebrations.
In a statement released on Monday, December 23, 2024, the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, announced that Wednesday and Thursday, December 25 and 26, 2024, as well as Wednesday, January 1, 2025, will be observed as public holidays.
The minister, a prominent All Progressives Congress (APC) chieftain, extended warm wishes to Christians and all Nigerians, both at home and abroad. He urged citizens to emulate the teachings and virtues of Jesus Christ, particularly his humility, service, compassion, and patience.
Magdalene Ajani, Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Interior, emphasized that the federal government remains committed to ensuring peace and security across the nation.
The statement from the ministry reads in part:
“The Christmas season is a good moment for both spiritual reflection and national renewal. As we celebrate the birth of Jesus, the Prince of Peace, let us demonstrate kindness and extend goodwill to one another, irrespective of our differences.”
It added:
“While wishing Nigerians a merry Christmas and a prosperous 2025, the Minister expressed his confidence in the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Tinubu’s administration ushering in the new year, a better and prosperous economy that will be the envy of the world.”
