Today, September 6, 2023, the panel of tribunal judges will issue the highly anticipated decision of the Presidential Election Petition Tribunal (PEPT) on the outcome of the 2023 presidential election.
You may recall that the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate Bola Tinubu was proclaimed the victor of the elections on February 25 by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
However, Peter Obi and Atiku Abubakar, the presidential contenders for the Labour Party (LP) and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), respectively, in the election, contested the outcome in court.
Aside from that, Tinubu’s victory was contested by the Allied Peoples Movement (APM).
According to Naija News, the Registrar of the Court of Appeal, Umar Bangari, stated in a statement on Monday that the Tribunal would issue its decision about the results of the 2023 presidential election today, on Wednesday.
He claimed that three petitions would be resolved today. As follows:
1. CA/PEPC/03/23 between Mr Peter Obi of the Labour Party vs. the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and three others.
2. CA/PEPC/04/2023 between the Allied Peoples Movement vs. the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and four others.
3. CA/PEPC/05/23 between Abubakar Atiku of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) vs. the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and two others.
All verdicts would be broadcast live on television, according to the statement. However, only accredited people, attorneys, and representatives of political parties would be permitted inside the courthouse.
Security personnel, including the military and police, have threatened to deal firmly with any individual or group that tries to stir up violence before the judgment.
Prior to the judgment’s delivery, the final written addresses of the parties involved in the lawsuit were adopted by the five-member presidential election tribunal under the direction of Justice Haruna Simon Tsamani.
