Following the perceived security challenges some of the host cities of the 2014 FIFA World Cup are facing, an extra 2,000 Police officials has been deployed to Rio to help reduce the rate of crime. In the wake of exchange of gunfire by different drug gangs and police in recent time, the need to beef up security in city becomes imperative.
With the attention of the world shifting to Brazil and also playing host to thousands of tourist, the country needs to be secured and all hands are on deck to increase the state of security around tourist-favorite Copacabana beach which has a slum located one block from it which has been one of the areas with fierce crime rate recently.
Rio state security head Jose Beltrame said, “We’ve really perceived an increase in crimes, we’ve seen a gradual increase since the second half of last year. As of Monday we’re putting all police in the street in an effort to lessen these crimes.”
