All over various social media platforms, both celebrities and ordinary folk alike have taken up tweeting support for Noura.

They’ve not only shown support for Noura but have, by unspoken agreement, used a hashtag to call for the pardon of Noura.

The question is, who is Noura?

Noura, full name Noura Hussein, is a 19-year-old who has been sentenced to death by a Sudanese court. This is after she stabbed her husband to death who she said had raped her.

The relative of the man she was forced to marry had held her down, she said, while he raped her.

Despite the circumstances surrounding the manslaughter, her husband’s relatives refused the option to pardon her and rejected compensation. Instead, they requested that she be executed.

A long history of abuse

Noura, according to CNN, had been forced to marry at the early age of 15 and resorted to running away from home.

She was tricked into returning by her dad three years later, who handed her over to her husband’s family.

One of her lawyers, Adil Mohamed Al-Imam, said she was raped after she refused to willingly consummate the marriage. He said:

His brother and two cousins tried to reason with her, when she refused she was slapped and ordered into the room. One held her chest and head, the others held her legs.

When her husband attempted raping her again the following day, she stabbed him to death.

Noura’s lawyers had 15 days to appeal after the ruling, 7 days remain.

#JusticeforNoura

While the world watches on, people have taken to social media to trend the hashtag ‘#JusticeforNoura’ to show their support of her case.

Not only are they showing support, they are also demanding the charges be dropped and for her release.

The hashtag has thus far been trending on social media, and even supermodel Naomi Campbell has tweeted her support, sharing a photo of herself holding a piece of paper with the hashtag written.

“We can all support by raising awareness, speaking to authorities, and continuing to keep the issue at the forefront as the team fights for her appeal” #JusticeForNourapic.twitter.com/4T5j6qYoxR

There also have been online petitions being passed around too.

The fight for #repealthe8th reminds me of the global struggle for women to be treated with humanity and decency. The story of Noura #JusticeForNoura is sickening and awful. Her story needs international recognition before it is too late. Please sign. https://t.co/1f6F4uNbwY

And of course, Naomi Campbell also supported Noura.

I, Naomi Campbell, urge the Sudanese government to pardon rape victim Noura Hussein and show the world, that women who are brutally raped, are the real victims. #JusticeForNoura ??
