Harry Kane, Tottenham’s club-record scorer and talisman, was sold to Bayern Munich on the eve of the new season, but Tottenham has had a successful start to the season with four points from their first two games against Brentford and Manchester United.
Tottenham Hotspur defeated Manchester United 2-0 Wednesday, August 19, to earn their first win of the Premier League season.
Although Bruno Fernandes of United blew a wonderful opportunity and both teams were denied by the woodwork in a fluid game, Postecoglou’s Tottenham earned the three points for a strong second-half performance.
Dejan Kulusevski made a strong run down the right and surged into the area in the 49th minute, giving Spurs the lead following a spirited first half. Pape Matar Sarr scored the goal. Sarr was in a good position to flick the low cross from the Swede into the roof of the net after it was deflected into his path.
At the other end, Antony nearly gave United a quick response, but Tottenham goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario made a diving one-handed save to save Casemiro’s header following a free kick into the area in the 56th minute.
Bruno Fernandes was denied by the goalie once more, while Spurs’ Son Heung-min had a shot at the other end blocked following a well-executed passing move.
Spurs extended their lead with a stroke of luck after the pace had moderated a little. Ivan Perisic, a substitute, fired a low cross into the box toward Ben Davies. Davies couldn’t make good touch and attempted to shoot, but Martinez diverted the ball into the net.
Ange Postecoglou, the new manager of Tottenham, also has his first victory in the EPL. Last Saturday, the team was held to a thrilling 2-2 tie at Brentford.
