Manchester City kicked off their Premier League title defense with a 2-0 victory over Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Sunday.
Erling Haaland celebrated his 100th appearance for City in style by scoring his 91st goal to give his team the lead in the 18th minute. The Norwegian striker took advantage of a pass from Bernardo Silva, powering through Chelsea defenders Marc Cucurella and Wesley Fofana before finding the net past goalkeeper Robert Sanchez.
City cemented their win late in the game when former Chelsea midfielder Mateo Kovacic scored a second goal in the 84th minute. Kovacic took advantage of a disorganized Chelsea midfield, driving forward with no resistance and delivering a strong shot that Sanchez couldn’t keep out despite a slight touch.
Chelsea, managed by Enzo Maresca, struggled to find their rhythm in their Premier League opener, despite having some possession in both halves. Although Cole Palmer, Nicolas Jackson, and new signing Pedro Neto made some promising attacking moves, they were overshadowed by the reigning Premier League champions.
Minutes after Kovacic’s goal, Chelsea owner Todd Boehly was seen leaving the stadium visibly upset, with fans speculating about dissatisfaction with the team’s performance.
