The emergency meeting between the federal government and the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has ended with no agreement reached. The meeting, which was led by President Bola Tinubu and attended by the Attorney-General of the Federation, ministers of budget and planning, labour, finance, and agric, as well as the NLC and TUC representatives, was held to prevent the proposed nationwide protest by the workers.
According to Joe Ajaero, the president of the NLC, the protest will still hold on Tuesday, and their demands will be submitted to the national assembly during the protest. He added that it was the responsibility of the Department of State Services (DSS) to ensure that the protest is peaceful.
After the meeting, Ajaero addressed journalists, saying that their list of demands would be made available to the media after the meeting with the national assembly. He also disclosed that they were not holding rallies for the sake of it but to present their demands.
Earlier, PDP stalwart Rilwan Olanrewaju accused the NLC leadership of being compromised with the current Nigerian government. He wondered why the workers took so long to stage a protest and made the comment while reacting to the warning by the police and the DSS against the planned protest.
