The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) has imposed a fine of N200 million on the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) for violating tariff regulations. According to a statement released by NERC on Friday, AEDC failed to comply with the tariff guidelines, causing concerns among consumers and stakeholders in the industry.
Upon a thorough review and considering customer feedback, NERC found that AEDC had applied the new tariff to all customer bands, which contradicted the order’s objective of ensuring fair billing practices. Consequently, NERC has directed AEDC to refund customers in Bands B, C, D, and E who were billed above the allowed tariff bands specified in the order.
The commission cited AEDC’s non-compliance as the reason for the hefty fine, emphasizing the need for electricity distribution companies to adhere to regulatory guidelines and ensure fair billing practices for consumers.
