The man arrested on Wednesday near Ekiti Government House, Ado Ekiti over suspicion that he had bomb on him was only wearing a branded belt with a timepiece.
This was a clarification made by the Police in Ekiti state by the state Commissioner of Police, Mr. Sotonye Wakama while briefing newsmen in Ado on the incident. He said the man arrested did not carry any explosive device on him but had a branded waist belt that was mistaken for an explosive device.
Wakama, who reacted to the bomb scare that caused panic in the Ekiti State capital on Wednesday, said the police had no immediate evidence to conclude that the suspect, Mr. Adedayo Ogungbemile, 22, was a suicide bomber.
According to the Ekiti Police Commissioner, “the suspect’s clothing and receptacles, including a blue-coloured waist belt, had been thoroughly examined by the Explosive Ordinance Department experts attached to the command,” adding “we reiterate that, at this point there is no evidence or reason to suggest that subject was conveying an explosive device or is a terrorist.”
Wakama said Olugbemile an indigene of Ijesa-Isu in Ikole Local Government Area of Ekiti State, said “he is 22-year-old part-time student of Ekiti State University, with matriculation number UNAD/BAM5/2008/994 and is currently at 400 level reading Business Administration.”
The police said “the suspect has not informed on the reason for his being in government house, and at the time of initial interrogation, was not coherent leading to a need for psychiatric evaluation pending further enquiry.”
